She was driven by a strong sense of order and duty, a trait that made her an excellent candidate for security work. In the chaotic final months before the Great War, she was selected by a Vault-Tec recruiter specifically for her military-grade security training and her unimpeachable service record. She viewed her transfer to Vault-Tec as an emergency promotion, believing she was being tasked with safeguarding humanity's future.

A run-of-the-mill vault dweller, having been transferred from the resident assistant chef in the diner of vault 29, before a defective administrative protectron transferred Cook to a low level corporate position. Because of this clerical error, or "failing upwards"as his father put it, Nathan was obligated to report to corporate HQ in the west coast, where, after taking an aptitude test, corporate realized his lack of potential for the role, and summarily relocated him to the closest vault they could think of.

Vince Castellanos was born in Vault 10 — one of the few functioning Vaults still sealed since the Great War. Life there is built on order, discipline, and silence. Every day begins with the same morning broadcast: “Vault-Tec protects, Vault-Tec provides.”

His father was a security sergeant, his mother a supply clerk. From the start, Vince’s life was structured — clean uniforms, perfect posture, and absolute trust in the Overseer. He joined Vault Security at 18, excelling in observation and investigation. He wasn’t the strongest officer, but he was the most perceptive; he noticed the nervous glance before a lie, the twitch in a hand before a fight.
